Flood Management Prjocets and Planning

Watershed Master Planning

As technical expert and planning partner for the BRWM, SARA is leading an effort to create watershed master plans for the five major watersheds of Bexar County. Studies for these master plans are comprised of three phases:

  1. Identification and ranking of flood management capital projects based on identified “damage centers” where flood damage is predicted to be greatest.
  2. Identification of areas that would benefit from natural waterway conveyance projects (channel-clearing); identification of utility crossings where storm water could potentially cause scouring of the streambed; and feasibility of buyouts where other flood management methods will not work.
  3. Identification of water quality best management practices along streams and in flood management facilities and identification of low impact development and zoning practices for consideration by local government.

The Leon Creek Watershed Master Plan is in the final phase; SARA will begin the San Antonio Watershed and Salado Creek Watershed Master Plans in early 2010.
